Back in the Day with YouTube

Here are some more choice nostalgia selections from youtube.com:

Digital Underground – Doowutchyalike

De La Soul – Buddy

3rd Bass – Brooklyn Queens

Tribe Called Quest – Left My Wallet in El Segundo

Public Enemy – Night of the Living Baseheads

MC Hammer – Turn This Mother Out

Kool Moe Dee – I Go to Work

Man, anyone else remember when hip-hop was just fun? Does anybody remember laughter?

Snakes on a Plane!!

Samuel L. Jackson is starring in a movie called Snakes on a Plane. Seriously. He says the title was part of the appeal. Apparently it’s just crazy enough to work, because the Net is already awash in parodies and jokes. If the old adage is true about there being no such thing as bad publicity, this is a good test case:

Snakes on a Plane at Wikipedia
Snakes on a Plane at Wired
Snakes on a Plane 2: Planes on a Snake
Cartoons and T-shirts

Quoth Jackson: “That’s the only reason I took the job: I read the title.”

I just ordered the t-shirt.

Tip Your Pizza Deliveryperson

Fark had a link to dozens of true pizza delivery stories recently and I’ve now read through several of them. I’m continually fascinated by these stories because I always wonder about people and how they live their home lives. There are some seriously freaky people in this world, and they order pizza just like the rest of us. These stories offer interesting peeks into the national fabric, case studies of eccentrics, deviants, criminals and weirdos. Tip your pizza deliveryperson well.

Random Things and The Grandiloquent Dictionary

The Grandiloquent Dictionary is a magical place to explore and to improve your vocabulary of obscure words. So far my favorite is quasihemidemisemiquaver – according to British musical notation, a 128th note. I should buy quasihemidemisemiquaver.com and start a guitar site for people who like to play really fast.

In other news, I noticed that the Encore movie channel has either purposefully or accidentally added older movies to their channels that have the same titles as recent movies. Twice it has happened that I have clicked on the title (AND description) of a recent movie only to find a completely different film by the same name: Jersey Girl and The Aviator. The former being a 1992 Jami Gertz/Dylan McDermott vehicle, and the latter being a 1985 Christopher Reeve/Rosanna Arquette picture. In both cases the description listed the more popular Kevin Smith and Martin Scorsese films. I’m just waiting for them to add Kicking & Screaming, because they’ll most likely not play the more recent Will Ferrell film, and I’ll get to see one of my favorite movies of all time on TV.

Last night I got my car stuck in the mud….of my driveway. It was dark, and I moved a road cone blocking my drive, assuming that it was absentmindedly left there when in fact it was put there for a very specific reason, namely the gaping, muddy hole where the skirt of my driveway once was. It was a reasonably level pit, a perfect fit for my vehicle, which was unable to jump up onto the remaining driveway, or move back up the muddy slope to the road. Fortunately for me a couple guys were still out working, paving my neighbors new driveway, and they gave me a short tow with the arm of their backhoe. I parked in the backyard. They said they should have a new driveway for me by tonight; I’ll be curious to see how that works out.

Don’t Be a Mr. Bungle

Fans of Pee Wee Herman will remember a video that played on his original stage show (later an HBO special) about lunchroom manners. “Mr. Bungle” (later an insane rock band led by genius/madman Mike Patton) was the central spectre in shaming children into behaving. Of course the good folks at The Internet Archive have tons of this sort of thing. It makes for multitudinous opportunities for MST3K-ification.

I enjoyed the keywords that classify the film: social engineering and puppet chaos.

Achewood Blogs and Yarn Lust

I don’t think I’ve mentioned the comic strip Achewood before, but I’ve recently discovered that each character in the strip has his or her own blog. What a weird world we live in where there are blogs written by cartoon characters. Roast Beef‘s blog today was amusing as it seemed to plug into Amy’s blog about yarn lust.

Uh huh so it seems a thing, based on my research, is that younger ladies are all into knitting now. It is like sort of a backlash or something, after all that 80s and 90s stuff where a lady had to prove that she was also a man.

Of course, Amy has always been a domestic engineer supreme. And software engineer. And poet. And writer. And amateur phrenologist.

Distilled Internet: The Haters

Digg.com is a fun site for tech/geek news headlines. It’s like Slashdot, but maybe not as esoteric. Also, the comments tend to lack the erudition of Slashdot, or the cleverness of Fark. A recent article caught my eye, MySpace Creates Own Record Label, and clicking on the comments revealed one of the quintessential examples of nerd loser/haters I’ve ever seen.

An important part of the Internet for many many people is dissing things. Whether it’s movies, music, technology or what have you, there’s invariably a cadre of people with apparently only the highest standards of taste. Reading through their incisive commentary on the relative merits of MySpace, I can only assume these are people who haven’t had the same fantastic experiences with MySpace that I have had: meeting amazing people, finding new favorite bands, and generally exercising creativity via virtual community.

Certainly for nerds, MySpace has its disontents. People who attempt to spruce up their pages with various HTML editing programs generally fail horribly. And the population of users tends to lean toward insufferably annoying teenagers, but that certainly is no fault of MySpace.

Updates at Google Maps

Last time I checked Google Maps, they were pretty crusty over Europe, but now they’ve definitely improved. Although still without street maps or any kind of text references, the satellite photos of Paris and London are pretty neat. That London link shows St. Dunstan’s, the church featured on the last day of the UK Travelogue.

Something else to check out – the renovation of Battersea Power Station (sans roof). Pink Floyd might recognize it.

Also I realized I hadn’t checked out San Francisco. If you click that link, be aware that I walked from the upper right of your screen to the lower left. Sometimes I impress even myself.
